Many of the taxpayers in the ongoing tax fair are compelled to submit their tax returns by using existing Taxpayers Identification Number (TIN) due to various problems in their National Identity Card (NID).
The e-TIN website is not accepting their application for obtaining new TIN due to incorporation of wrong data in their NID.
Those taxpayers are filling up a form, given by taxmen, and leaving the fair premises with a receipt of tax return submission.
Md Golam Sarwar, proprietor of a travel agency, said taxmen asked him to get his NID information corrected from the Election Commission (EC).
"It might take a long time to correct the information in the NID. So, I have to submit returns using my existing TIN," he added.
Talking to the FE on the fair premises Wednesday, many of the taxpayers said they came here to take e-TIN, but either the process is taking a long time or the system is not functioning properly.
Faruq Ahmed, an ex-banker, said he has to wait for four hours for completing the returns submission procedure.
Senior citizens should get priority in the tax booths, he opined.
NBR first secretary Khurshid Kamal said there will be queues for taxpayers from Thursday, as taxmen are facing problems to handle huge crowd.
He also urged the taxpayers to exercise patience, keeping in mind the low speed of internet in the country.
"We have found many visitors who are computer literate, but they came to the fair for obtaining e-TIN," Mr Kamal said.
Despite hartal a number of people of different ages came to the fair Wednesday.
NBR member Bashir Uddin Ahmed said enthusiasm among the people proves that the taxmen have been able to motivate them through different initiatives.
"It is the responsibility of all citizens to pay tax, and we are providing voluntary services for them."
He also acknowledged the taxpayers' hassle in obtaining e-TIN due to errors in their voter ID.
Meanwhile, it was seen that some people adjacent to the fair premises are providing e-TIN obtaining services to the taxpayers by taking fees.
In the last three days, a total of 160,230 people obtained services from the tax fairs across the country. Some 28,074 existing TIN holders and 5,092 new people obtained TIN.
The NBR received 37,868 tax returns and collected Tk 3.55 billion from the tax fairs that will continue until September 22.
Until Wednesday, some 322,000 people across the country registered in the e-TIN website.
