Years last trading session ends in positive note

The last trading session of the year ended in positive territory Tuesday with improving turnover as investors took position on heavyweight stocks amid optimism.

The offices of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) will remain closed today (Wednesday) due to Yearly Bank Holiday. Therefore, there will be no trade on Wednesday.

The market opened with an optimistic note and maintained a steady upward trend throughout the session.  DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) went up by 50.80 points or 1.05 per cent to close at 4,864.96 points.

The DS30, comprising blue chips gained 22.45 points or 1.26 per cent to close at 1,803.05 points. The DSE Shariah Index advanced 13.38 points or 1.17 per cent to close at 1,150.22 points.

Turnover crossed Tk 2.50 billion-mark after four sessions and amounted to Tk 2.65 billion, registering an increase of 40.17 per cent over the previous session's value of Tk 1.89 billion.

The investors' attention was mostly focused on pharma, power and bank - the sectors that accounted for 14.94 per cent, 14.20 per cent and 13.46 per cent respectively of the day's total turnover.

"Market got some breath as investors went long to equities with increased participation," said LankaBangla Securities in an analysis.

Value hunters may have found the market to be a bit discounted. The last trading day of the year observed buying interest in heavyweight stocks, said the stock broker.

IDLC Investments said: As the trading will remain halted today (Wednesday) due to bank holiday, investors rushed to year-end portfolio re-balancing amid lucrative prices".

"The market picked up right where it left off in previous session amid the growing optimism from the investors," said International Leasing Securities.

DSEX soared as large-cap stocks from leading sectors witnessed substantial price hike throughout the day, said the International Leasing.

All the major sectors gained. Food and allied registered the highest gain with 1.83 per cent gain. Cement and telecommunication appreciated by 1.54 per cent and 1.53 per cent respectively.

Pharmaceuticals also posted decent gain of 1.14 per cent. NBFIs and banks went up by 0.89 per cent and 0.60 per cent respectively. Fuel and power edged up by 0.53 per cent.

The gainers took a lead over the losers as out of 309 issues traded, 228 advanced, 52 declined and 29 remained unchanged on the DSE floor.

Activities increased in the major bourse (DSE) where trade and volume were up by 17.6 per cent and 31.01 per cent respectively. A total of 0.068 million trades were executed with trading volume of 65.69 million securities.

The market capitalisation on DSE stood at Tk 3,259.24 billion against Tk 3,227.80 billion in the previous session.

MJL BD was the most traded stock with shares worth Tk 107.64 million changing hands followed by Beximco Pharma, GP, Lafarge Surma Cement and IDLC Finance.

Al-Haj Textile was the day's top gainer, posting a rise of 10 per cent while Safko Spinning was the day's worst loser, plunging 8.85 per cent.

The port city bourse, Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed in the green with its Selective Categories Index - CSCX - gained 76.57 points to close at 9,058.35 points.

Gainers beat losers 157 to 56, with 26 issues remaining unchanged at the port city bourse that traded 7.14 million shares and mutual fund units, turnover value of Tk 621.64 million.
