'2016 to be yr of progress for capital market'

CHITTAGONG, Oct 8: The calendar year 2016 will be the year of advancement for the capital market of Bangladesh. But it needs a stable atmosphere in the country.

Chairman of Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) Prof Dr M Khairul Hossain said this while inaugurating the two-day capital market fair in the city today. The fair has been organised by the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) at the GEC Convention Centre.

Commissioner of the BSEC Prof Md Helal Uddin Nizami and Chairman of Central Depository Bangladesh Ltd Sheikh Kabir Hossain addressed the fair's opening session as special guests.

The function was chaired by CSE Chairman Dr Md Abdul Majid while CSE Managing Director Wali-ul Maroof Matin made the address of welcome. There are 98 stalls in the fair which is open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Thanking the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange Prof Khairul Hossain said the BSEC has been working for qualitative advancement of the capital market. "It has been possible because the country's two bourses are with the BSEC."

"The year 2016 will be the year of advancement for the country's capital market if the political atmosphere and other circumstantial conditions remain static," he said expressing his hope.

Praising the CSE for organising the fair the BSEC Chairman said the CSE through this fair is not speaking for itself alone but also speaking for overall advancement of the capital market.

Expressing hope that the bright days are coming in near future he said the existing trading gap between the DSE and CSE would not last longer. This gap will be narrowed down and to achieve that goal the DSE will extend a helping hand, he said.

Prof Helal Nizami said the country's capital market is much more mature now than it was in the past. A strong regulatory body is working for development of the capital market. That is why the investors can keep full trust on the capital market.

Dr Abdul Majid said as in the past the CSE has organised the fair this year as well to create awareness among the investors. The fair has been so arranged that the investors could be provided with all sorts of advice relating to investment in the capital market.

He said over 200 experts on capital market would be available for consultation on any issue about the stock market. Not only the investors but also the visitors interested to learn something about the market would be given proper suggestions.

He further said the CSE has been working for the last 20 years and during this period it has been serving for the betterment of the small and big investors and this fair is part of that venture.

A seminar on Exchange Traded Fund - a new investment product in Bangladesh -- was organised on the first day of the fair. Director of Rupali Bank Prof Selim Uddin chaired the event.

BSEC Executive Director Md Hasan Mahmud presented the key-note paper in the seminar while Director of the CSE Mohammed Mohiuddin, FCMA addressed in it.
