U.K. stocks lower at close of trade; Investing.com United Kingdom 100 down 0.17%


U.K. stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Industrial Metals & Mining, Forestry & Paper and Food & Drug Retailers sectors led shares lower.

At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 lost 0.17%.

The best performers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Ashtead Group PLC (L:AHT), which rose 8.63% or 89.00 points to trade at 1120.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Glencore PLC (L:GLEN) added 4.57% or 3.6300 points to end at 83.0800 and Rio Tinto PLC (L:RIO) was up 3.88% or 73.500 points to 1966.500 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Capita PLC (L:CPI), which fell 2.96% or 36.00 points to trade at 1178.00 at the close. Pearson PLC (L:PSON) declined 2.68% or 20.50 points to end at 743.50 and Hikma Pharmaceuticals PLC (L:HIK) was down 2.46% or 53.00 points to 2098.00.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the London Stock Exchange by 1311 to 804 and 438 ended unchanged.

Shares in Pearson PLC (L:PSON) fell to 5-year lows; losing 2.68% or 20.50 to 743.50.

Gold for February delivery was down 0.10% or 1.10 to $1074.20 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.19% or 0.07 to hit $37.44 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.11% or 0.04 to trade at $40.22 a barrel.

GBP/USD was up 1.00% to 1.5160, while EUR/GBP fell 0.25% to 0.7244.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.75% at 97.67.
