Stocks end year slightly higher

Dhaka, Dec 29 (bdnews24.com) – The two bourses ended the year 2011 up with both indices and turnovers higher on Thursday than the opening.

Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) general index gained 36.94 points or 0.70 percent to close at 5257.60 points on the last trading day of the year.

Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) selective categories index (CSCX) rose 80 points to stand at 9572 points.

The DSE turnover stood at Tk 5.59 billion, Tk 430 million higher than Wednesday's turnover while the turnover at CSE increased by Tk 6 million to stand at Tk 440.12 million.

Of the issues traded on the DSE, 197 advanced, 52 declined and 19 remained unchanged. Some 127 issues traded on the CSE gained, 41 lost and 25 remained unchanged.

After around a year of downtrend in the capital market, prime minister Sheikh Hasina met with the stakeholders on Nov 16. She asked authorities to compensate those who lost money due to continuous fall in share prices.

A week later, the Securities and Exchange Commission announced an incentives package. Bangladesh Bank and National Board of Revenue also took steps to help the sagging market.

Analysts think that the instability in the capital market has been easing since the second week of December.
